What's Happening At JJIS:

Day of Service

On Friday, we proudly hosted our schoolwide Day of Service. Throughout the day, students engaged in lessons centered on kindness, empathy, and the importance of using words to uplift others. These conversations were paired with authentic service opportunities, allowing students to put their learning into action.
As part of our efforts to support the Colchester community, students donated items to create “Blessing Bags” for homebound residents. We partnered with the Colchester Senior Center, who will distribute these bags to local residents in need. This initiative provided students with a tangible way to give back while fostering a sense of connection across generations.
We were also fortunate to collaborate with several local organizations that led engaging, hands-on learning experiences for our students. These partnerships helped broaden students’ understanding of service in a variety of contexts. Participating organizations included:
  • Colchester is Kind
  • Colchester Fire and EMS
  • Colchester Giving Garden
  • Connecticut Humane Society
  • Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)
  • Litter Awareness LLC
  • United Way
  • Colchester Youth Center
The Day of Service was a powerful example of how we continue to build a culture of compassion, responsibility, and community engagement at Jackter. We are grateful for the support of our community partners and proud of our students for their enthusiasm and commitment to making a positive difference.

Fire Prevention Poster County Winner

Jack Jackter is proud to announce that 5th-grader Aubrey Gwiazdowski was selected as a county winner in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Aubrey was honored alongside other county winners from across the state at a special luncheon this past Friday.
Aubrey’s teacher, Mr. Federici, and principal, Dr. Ewings, were honored to attend the luncheon with her. Aubrey’s artwork will also be featured in the 2027 Fire Prevention Calendar.

Grade 3 Jazz and Poetry Residency

Third grade has been working with teaching artist Leslie Johnson on a Jazz and Poetry residency. Students are learning about jazz music and then using this knowledge to write poetry. So far they have written “Allow Me To Introduce Myself” poems about something they love! They have learned about improvisation, rhythm and rhyme.

Grade 4 March Madness Book Tournament

One of our fourth grade classes finished their March Madness Book Tournament! All students did an amazing job convincing others to read their book. The two finalists were The Lemonade War and The Crossover. Students voted and the class winning book was The Lemonade War!

The PTO is putting something special together for the end of the school year and would love your help!

  • First day of school photos
  • Field trips
  • Classroom activities or school events
  • Fun candid moments at school

Please do not include sports, birthday parties, or non-school events.
