JJIS News From the Nurses

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year!

We would like to take this opportunity to share some important health information and policies with you.

Family Handbook and Student Agenda: Please review the Health Information section- it has important information regarding medication, when to keep your child home, screenings, PE/gym excuses, etc. Please use it as a reference.

Medications: Parents/guardians are responsible for bringing medication to and from school. Absolutely no medication (prescription or over the counter) can be given for any reason without the doctor’s authorization stating the name of the drug, dosage, method, and time the medication is to be given. This is a state law, which must be strictly enforced.

If your child is taking any medication (regular, as needed, temporary, prescription, or non-prescription) at home, the school nurse should be informed in writing of the drug name and dosage. This information is critical so that personnel can be alert for potentially harmful drug interactions or reactions.

Medical Conditions: Please inform the nurse of any medical condition your child may have been diagnosed with. Please have your child’s provider document any diagnoses, specific treatments, medications, and plan to be in place for school. Please bring this documentation to the nurse’s office to keep in your child’s medical record.

Screenings: Throughout the fall/winter all children will be screened for vision and hearing. In the early spring, fifth grade female students will be screened for Scoliosis. Should your child fail to pass any screening procedure, a referral letter will be sent home. Please be prompt in follow-up on the referral. If students have a visual or hearing problem, it may adversely impact their education.

Health Office Visits: During the school year, the nurses’ office is staffed by two nurses. If your child visits the health office during the day and it warrants further assessment at home, you will receive a phone call, email, and/or note home.

Change of Clothing: We do not keep extra clothing in the health office. Please make sure you pack a complete change of clothes for your child. If your child requires a change of clothes and they do not have any in their bag, a parent will be asked to come to the school to bring it in.

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns regarding your child.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation!
