What's Happening at JJIS

Grade 5 Biography Presentations

The students in Mrs. Totten's and Mr. Domler's 5th grade have worked very hard the past 5 weeks during SGI.
Each child chose a famous person to learn more about. They read books and used websites to gather facts. Then, they organized notes into a speech. They created a timeline of the person's life and made a display board. Today, they are dressed up as their person and will be presenting all of that information to our community, parents, and some classes. This is a great showcase of how they have become such independent learners!

Grade 4 Planetarium Trip

Fourth grade students enjoyed a trip to the Glastonbury Planetarium where they experienced a presentation on “Our Habitat Earth”.  Students will use the knowledge they learned to generate questions and discuss how humans impact our physical environment. Students will also explain what they can do to ensure a healthy, sustainable planet for future generations, and connect their new learning to experiments previously conducted in the classrooms to show how erosion, fossil fuels, and extreme weather can affect our environment. (unfortunately, the planetarium does not allow pics to be taken but a fun time was had by all.)  We would like to thank our amazing PTO for providing the funding for this trip.

Grade 3 Walking Field Trip

Our third grade classes are enjoying their walking field trips to learn about the history of Colchester.  During their walk, students visit several sites around the Colchester Green.  One of the stops is the burial grounds behind old Bacon Academy where students learn about a few important Colchester families as well as interesting information about the history graveyards can tell.  Did you know there is a tomb in this graveyard?  Another stop on the route is to the Colored School where students learn about education in the 1800s, one room schoolhouses, and Colchester's "Colored School".  Next students' favorite spot to visit is usually the Hayward Firehouse Museum where they learn about the first fighting efforts, explore Colchester's restored first fire engine (circa 1854), and try their hand at manually pumping water and using a firehose to put out a "fire".  A trip to the Colchester Historical Museum is another highlight of the trip.  Students learn all about the Bulkeley tomb restoration as well as Colchester's rich history of farming.  On the way home, third grade takes a quick stop at the Nathaniel Foote House to experience how families lived in the 1700s and 1800s.  Thank you to the Colchester Historical Society and volunteers who helped us set up and run this fabulous field trip.

4th and 5th Grade Concerts

Jack Jackter 4th and 5th grade band and chorus students did an amazing job performing during their spring concerts under the instruction of Mrs. Knickerbocker and Mrs. Goodwin. The fourth grade Cub band performed Fanfare and March, A Mozart Melody, and Miles Ahead by Jay Taylor while the Chorus sang songs like “Potato Chips” and “Thunder!”

Our 5th grade Jaguar band showcased their talents by performing Valor, Simple Gifts, and BB Rock while the chorus wowed the crowd with “Popcorn”, “I’m Still Good”, and “What is This Feeling?”.

Finally the Jackter Jazz Band, composed of both fourth and fifth grade students who meet and practice before school throughout the year featured their talents with the likes of “Aardvark Stomp!”, “Sway”, and “Midnight Creeper”.

We are so proud of all the hard work and dedication these students have put in while practicing for this special performance.

During the daytime dress rehearsal the students were accompanied by some of our talented music playing teachers.
